Shooting technique is one of the most common session requests I get at NetPlus.
Whether you are a beginner or an experienced player, improving your shooting technique is crucial to be able to nail in those big game winning moments.
Firstly, we need to nail our shooting technique before we can start to challenge it under pressure and under fatigue.
1. Perfect Your stance
The foundation of a good shot starts with proper stance. When you're in position to shoot, it's important to be balanced, stable, and focused. Here’s how to set yourself up for success:
Feet: Position your feet shoulder-width apart, with your weight evenly distributed. Keep your knees slightly bent to give yourself a strong base of support. This allows for more control and power in your shot.
Hips: Ensure your hips are square to the ring. Aligning your hips with the post.
2. Focus on the flick of the ball
Shooting is all about precision, and the flick of the ball plays an important part in guiding the ball into the ring.
Hand Placement: Hold the ball with your dominant hand underneath the ball, high above your head. We want a small gap between your hand and the ball to allow you to get a high release. Your non-dominant hand is on the side, just lightly touching. When we go to shoot, our hand should finish in an upside down J.
Shooting Action: As you release the ball, bend your knees and elbows at the same time, as you extend up your dominant hand follows through finishing up high in an upside down J. We want your fingers pointing towards the goal.
The ball should travel in a high arc towards the goal
Aim: You can look at the front, middle or back of the ring - just as long as every time you are looking at the same spot.
3. Consistency Is Key: Practice Regularly
The best shooters don’t just rely on natural talent—they practice consistently. Here are a few tips for building a consistent shooting routine:
Set Goals: Challenge yourself to hit a certain number of shots each day, or set a target percentage for accuracy. For example, aim to make 8 out of 10 shots from various points around the circle.
Repetition: The more you practice shooting, the more your muscle memory will develop. Regularly practicing shooting drills, such as "shoot and rebound" or "partner shooting," will help you become more consistent with your technique.
Video Analysis: Record yourself shooting and review the footage to identify areas where you can improve. Watch for things like your release point, foot positioning, and follow-through.
Keep Practicing and Stay Positive!
Improving your netball shooting technique takes time, dedication, and consistency.
